We have parks for humans. How about for bears too?

Grizzly bears are at risk of disappearing or are already extinct in many parts of the world. British Columbia's wilderness provides one of the last global safe havens for these bears. Sadly, humans are threatening their ability to survive here because of hunting, poaching, and the destruction of grizzly habitat due to development. The B.C. government can change this by creating grizzly bear management areas, or bear parks, where these majestic animals can feed, breed and den in peace. I'm writing to ask you to preserve this province as one of the last global safe havens for grizzly bears by acting to reduce the number of bears killed by humans and human activity.

British Columbia’s grizzly bears are among the most vulnerable large mammals on the continent to human-caused threats, such as climate change, degradation and loss of habitat, over-fishing of the salmon they feed on, and intentional mortality from hunting, control kills and poaching. Strong government laws and regulations to protect and recover grizzlies must address all of these threats if B.C. is to maintain healthy populations of grizzlies in the wild.

Your government opens the sport-hunting season every spring and fall for grizzlies and other bear species across the province, even though the trophy hunting of grizzlies is not supported by most British Columbians and is threatening a lucrative bear-viewing industry. Many First Nations also oppose the trophy hunt for cultural and spiritual reasons.

I'm asking you to act on the commitment you made to protect grizzly bears by creating a network of grizzly bear management areas (GBMAs) that act as sanctuaries for bears and other wildlife, where they can be safe from hunting and other human activities. This is a recommendation that was made to your government by a blue-ribbon panel of grizzly bear biologists in 2004 and more recently in 2010, but has yet to be adequately implemented. With your government's help, we can maintain B.C. as one of the last safe havens for grizzlies and save these iconic bears from disappearing.
